Ceramic Crayon

I’m so excited to introduce my new classic crayon! These medium-firm crayons feel just like the ones you loved as a kid. Their buttery consistency allows you to easily apply fully saturated color while maintaining a high level of control and tonal variation. They stay true to color up to cone 10 and can be sharpened with a standard, large-sized pencil sharpener.

These crayons are intended to be applied to bisque or fully fired clay. They can be used alone, as a wax resist, or accept clear glaze on top after firing.  If using on a food-contact surface (e.g. the inside of a bowl), you must apply a cover glaze. Be sure to fire in a well ventilated kiln.

Firing temperature is dependent on the surface you are applying to and ranges from cone 04 for fully fired clay to cone 6-10 when applied to bisque fired stoneware. More detailed firing information is included in the package insert, but I recommend creating sample tiles to see exactly how the crayons work with your clay and firing setup.

As a new product, there’s lots of room for experimentation. Try applying to the top of matte glazes, layering additional pigment after firing, or using in combination with my oil pastels and colored pencils. Keep an eye on my social media for upcoming demos and examples.
