Use Instructions

My products can be used alone, as a pigmented wax resist, or coated with a zinc-free type clear glaze.

To coat with clear glaze, first burn away the wax by bisque firing the drawings.

Do not wipe or wash bisque fired drawings.

Fire to cone 6-10.

Dip or spray glazing is preferred. This reduces the likelihood of smudging your drawings. Firm hold hair spray can be used as a fixative to help avoid smudging.

My products are easy to smudge or erase before glaze firing, so caution is needed when handling work after the wax has been burned away. After glaze firing, the drawings are permanent.

My products fire true to color up to cone 10, can be sharpened with a standard, large-size pencil sharpener, and are fully erasable before firing. (Except for the oil pastels, which are very soft and won’t need to be sharpened.)

As a new type of ceramic drawing implement, there’s a lot of room for experimentation. Try color blending, using in combination with other Stone’s Handmade products, or using with commercial underglazes. I highly recommend making test tiles to see how the products work with your specific process, materials, and firing schedule.

If applied to fully fired clay, my products will become permanent at cone 04. If applied thickly to fully vitrified clay, the pastels will melt and run.

Safety considerations

If applying to a food surface, a suitable food-safe glaze must be applied on top of my products.
Gloves or barrier cream recommended during use.
Fire in a well ventilated kiln.
Do not ingest.
Children should use only with supervision.
Store in a cool, dry space. Wax bloom is natural and will not affect function.
